Life Skills Learning Kit

Week of May 25-29

On May 12, 2020 the Premier of Quebec, a man named Francois Legault recommended that all Quebecers use a face mask when they go out. You can help protect others by wearing a mask when in public.  Sometimes when you have covid19 you may not have any symptoms but can still be contagious and infect others.  It is said a mask will help limit the spread of the disease in these cases.
If you are like me and have no idea how to sew you can make a no-sew mask out an old T-Shirt. All you need is scissors, a pencil, a ruler, and a t-shirt you don't mind being used to make a face mask.

Give it a try and email pictures of your homemade mask to agreevy@nfsb.qc.ca
If you are really up for a challenge, experiment with the size of piece of material/old T-shirt and see if you can make a smaller size mask suitable for kids.
*Please note, children under 2 years of age should not wear masks.

Week of June 1-5
A lot of parents are looking for things for their kids to do while they are off school.  As a result, many things like basketball nets, trampolines, outdoor play structures/swing sets and kid’s ATVs are sold out.

Your mission this week is to find a basketball system (not just the backboard) similar to the one pictured below (you can fill the base with water and adjust the height of the net) in stock at a store that is somewhat local (Valleyfield, Chateauguay, or Vaudreuil).

We are on a budget, we have 500.00$ plus taxes to spend.
There are two ways you could do this, check stock online or if you do not have access to internet, the way I would have done it when I was your age, by calling stores.
First thing you need to do is figure out what stores would sell this item. If you can’t think of what stores sell basketball nets ask someone.

If you check stock online, take screen shots of all your different search results and email them to me at agreevy@nfsb.qc.ca.
If you call stores, take notes of the store and the price and organize your data.

Good Luck!

Week of June 8-12

I swear since this pandemic started all my kids do is eat.  At school, my kids would have a morning snack, lunch then an afternoon snack.  Since they have been home I feel like they think the kitchen is a self-serve buffet.  I saw online that some parents solved this issue by setting out a basket with the same amount of snacks their child would have had at school and once they were done they were done.  I decided to have two Tupperware containers, one with mini muffins another with hard boiled eggs.  They could grab one of those as snacks whenever they wanted.  I make a lot of hard boiled eggs!
You are probably wondering why I am telling you this. It is because I hate removing the shell from hard boiled eggs.  Sometimes you get eggs that are so hard to peel, the shell comes off in little pieces or you take a chunk of egg with it.  My mom swears by making eggs in an instant pot (google it if you don’t know what it is) so that they peel easily.  Other people swear by other ways.
Below are 3 ways people swear by to make the perfect hard boiled eggs that are easy to peel.  Your task is to try each way (you can make how many eggs you want) and email me at agreevy@nfsb.qc.ca with which way you found was the easiest to peel.
Vinegar Method
Place the eggs in a saucepan.
Cover the eggs with lukewarm water.
Add in 2 teaspoons white vinegar and pinch salt.
Bring to a full boil over medium heat; boil for 2 minutes (start timing after the water reaches a    full boil).
Remove from heat cover with a tight lid.
Allow the eggs to stand for 11 minutes.
Drain the eggs a couple times under very cold water.
Cover the eggs with cold water and allow the eggs to sit in the cold water for about 3 minutes.
Drain and peel.

Baking Soda Method
Place eggs and cold water in a saucepan.
Add ½ teaspoon baking soda
Bring water to a simmer (before water boils)
Remove the saucepan from heat and cover it with a lid.
Wait 10 to 12 minutes.
Remove egg(s) and place them in an ice bath (cold water with ice in it) for 2-3 minutes.
Remove from ice bath, peel and eat.

My Way
Place eggs in saucepan with cold water.
Bring the water to a boil.
Once the water comes to a hard boil (really bubbling) set the timer for 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and place in an ice bath.
*note: I usually run under cold water instead of the ice bath
Drain, peel and eat.

Week of June 15-19

In the news, they are talking a lot about vaccines because a lot of scientists and companies are trying to make a vaccine for SARS-COV2 the virus that causes Covid19.

Immunization (vaccination) is a way to create immunity to (protection from) some diseases. This is done by using small amounts of a killed or weakened germ that causes the disease. Germs can be viruses (such as the measles virus) or bacteria (such as pneumococcus).

The Québec Immunization Program aims to improve the population’s health by offering vaccines. These vaccines protect against specific diseases such as:
  • Diphtheria
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Hepatitis A and hepatitis B
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections
  • Measles
  • Meningococcal infections
  • Mumps
  • Pneumococcal infections
  • Poliomyelitis
  • Rotavirus gastroenteritis
  • Rubella
  • Serious Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infections
  • Tetanus
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Whooping cough
Quebec has a recommended immunization schedule for the vaccines they provide. Consult the chart and tell me when the kids below are due to have their next vaccines and what vaccines they will receive.
