Outstanding Citizenship Recipients Profiles
Karina Bertrand

Karina Bertrand is a Secondary 5 student from CVR. She was selected as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen because she models the Six Pillars of Character so well. She is respectful to all and a strong contributing member of any group in which she participates. Not only is Karina a strong student academically but she is well rounded and is very involved in extracurricular activities.
Karina is a major participant in the school’s Student Union. This year she was co-president of the leadership group. She clearly illustrated her leadership capabilities at every meeting. Always considerate of others, Karina pays particular attention to the opinions, comments and input of those in a group.
Karina has a very strong work ethic. She arranged her school timetable this year so that she could participate in extracurricular activities, work hard in her academics and hold a part time job.
Her service has been in tutoring in an after school homework club. She is a volunteer at a community organization, Affaire de Famille and she was one of the organizers for the CVR talent show.
Karina plans to attend Dawson College in the Community Recreation and Leadership training program.

Vanessa Cousins-Lussier

Vanessa Cousins-Lussier is a Secondary Four student at CVR. She is a very gifted student and is presently in the Universal Program. Vanessa is dedicated, hardworking and is always respectful of her teachers and her peers.
This year, Vanessa was inspired when she heard a presentation about a community-based organization called Heshima. Along with another classmate, Vanessa volunteered to attend CVR’s Open House and speak to people about this organization. The public awareness campaign that she and the other student initiated was excellent.
As part of this Service Learning project, she organized a photo contest and donated the proceeds to Heshima. She then offered to write an article for the Gleaner in which she highlighted all the projects in which the class participated. She believed that public awareness would trigger more support for this cause. This is a quality of great citizenship and we congratulate you Vanessa on being chosen as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen.

Gabriel Heuvelink

Gabriel Heuvelink is a Secondary Four student at CVR. Gabriel was nominated as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen for many reasons. He has been a member of the Student Union and the treasurer of this group. He accepted this responsibility very seriously and was extremely reliable. Gabe will often spend his lunch hours and after school time counting and organizing funds for the group.
Gabriel has been a role model for other students at CVR. He is an enthusiastic contributor to every event at school. From fundraising through bakes sales, to anti-bullying initiatives, Gabe has been very involved. He was the driving force behind this year’s Free the Children’s Vow of Silence and the “Love is Louder” activity.
Gabe’s teachers say that he is a joy to work with because he always has such a positive attitude. He is willing to avail himself to any issue that will make a difference to his school community.
He has a strong work ethic and an unrelenting optimism and it is felt that he will be a future leader in making change.

Julianna Krobath

Julianna Krobath is a Secondary Four student at CVR. Julianna was selected as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen because she is a hard working member of C.V.R.’s Student Union. She is a well-rounded individual whose interpersonal skills have helped her build a strong bond with the Student Union group. She is very positive and enthusiastic and offers her time to help organize school events throughout the year.
Julianna is a true leader. She listens and takes the opinions of others into consideration. She sets goals for herself and works hard to achieve them. She always puts the needs of others before her own. She has become a major contributor to many charitable activities including Free the Children events, as well as other fundraising projects for a non-profit organization called Heshima, which helps support refugees in Kenya.

Julie MacFarlane

Julie is a Secondary 5 student at CVR and was selected as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen for many reasons. Her character reflects one of caring, reliability and responsibility. Julie is very involved in social issues and has embraced the Free the Children initiative.
It is said that if one is kind to animals then one will be kind and respectful to people. Julie would like to become a veterinarian because of her love of animals and obviously her compassion for people.
Julie has played a large role in the school community and continues to maintain her high academic standards. She has achieved honour standings at CVR and is taking many diverse courses and is succeeding with high academics. She is insightful and thoughtful.
Julie is also an active member of the community. She belongs to her local chapter of the 4-H club in Howick and has held a number of executive roles both locally and provincially.

Claudia Meganck

Claudia is a Secondary 4 student at CVR. She was chosen to be a New Frontiers School Board outstanding citizen because she actively demonstrates the Six Pillars of Character, identified by the NFSB, as well as the CVR community.
Claudia excels in academics and still has time to serve the community and be involved in worldwide initiatives. She is constantly striving to help others.
Claudia has participated in a school initiative where students try to improve the lives of others. She was instrumental in organizing a benefit concert at lunch time and donated the proceeds to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. As well, she helped make Christmas cards and delivered them to the retirement home in Ormstown. Claudia’s participation in this project was beyond the expectations of her teachers. She also collected cans from her friends and family and donated the proceeds to Heshima in Kenya.
In addition to her school related participation, Claudia is an active member of her community and regularly volunteers with her 4-H group. She participated in a pie bee, sold fair trade purses and was involved in a berry picking fundraiser that benefited La Bouffe Additionelle in Huntingdon.

Samual Rouleau

Samual Rouleau is a Secondary 5 student at CVR. He was selected as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen, because he is open and caring. He always puts those around him at ease. Sam is reliable and can be counted upon for any school activity. His warm spirit and his confidence have endeared him to many school members.
Sam has been actively involved in the Free the Children initiative this year. As well, he helped organize the annual Terry Fox run and is a member of the 4-H club that is connected to his community.
Sam always takes on strong leadership roles in the school. On many occasions he organized Facebook pages for various events. He is the co-executive of the Student Union, the student representative on the CVR governing board and a major participant in all the performing arts productions. As well, Sam has created a school website.
Congratulations Sam; you will definitely make a strong impression on any organization or community in which you are involved.

Jessica Van Horne

Jessica Van Horne is a Secondary 4 student at CVR. She was selected as a New Frontiers School Board Outstanding Citizen for many reasons. She is a strong academic student who is quiet, hardworking and respectful. Jessica can always be counted upon to do her best and she is extremely trustworthy. She is the first one to volunteer when someone needs help because she truly cares about others.
When Jessica first heard about the “Free the Children” initiative she was inspired by the message of hope. Jessica volunteered to attend CVR’s Open House so that she could speak about the organization. Her public awareness campaign was excellent.
She has exceptional organizational skills and uses them well in service projects in order to help others in the school, community and world.
